My new CSA Thornfield Farms

IMG_9108We always get a picture of Madigan and our favorite vendor at the beginning of the season.  So we can watch her grow.  Susanna from Thornfield Farm has become the person I most want to see at the market.  She grows the best tasting lettuces and greens.  I know you are thinking, how great can lettuce really be, go grab some and you will see, the best EVER.

IMG_9109I picked the farmers choice for my first CSA bagIMG_9122 IMG_9124HUGE head of green lettuce, smaller head of red leaf lettuce, bok choy, kale, spicey greens and some spinach.  Great thing about getting a mixed bag, we get to wing it on what dinner is.  Fresh salad tonight, tomorrow, greens with either fried chicken or pork chops.

Last CSA bag of the year

This is it, two types of potatoes, garlic, carrots, celeriac and butter nut squash. This might not only be the last of the year but also the last ever if we get the house. Our goal will be to not need a veggie CSA next year.

We have loved it all, thank you Seven Springs Farm!

celery root, beets, butternut squash, onions, potatoes, garlic, spinach.

The first time we ever got celery root, we had to call Bright Spirit at Fresh Abundance (the fresh food delivery that got us started on the local food thing) and ask what it was. I cut it up and put it in my stock pot for making soups.

Glorious meat

I didn’t have time to post before we went to the beach, so here is what we got with our meat CSA for September

That jar is lard. You have never seen anyone get as excited about lard as I did when I saw it might be available. Can’t wait to make biscuits or pie crust.

Oh and did I forget to mention we also stocked up on Sweet Italian sausage, that’s 25 lbs of Sweet Italian sausage for sauces, meatballs, lasagna and stuffed shells.

I got all the sausage in the freezer, I predict we will have enough space to accommodate the chicken we are getting in
